"Bachelor First, Then Vocational?" Its Real! Zhengzhou Railway Vocational College Repeatedly Enrolls University Graduates, Stirring Debate
Recently, Zhengzhou Railway Vocational and Technical College released its 2025 independent enrollment guidelines, stating that several majors are open to full-time university graduates. This unexpected move has sparked heated online discussion. The phrase "zhuan sheng ben" (from vocational to bachelor) has ironically become a hot topic in reverse.
According to the official documents, three majors—EMU Maintenance Technology, High-speed Railway Integrated Maintenance Technology, and Railway Transportation Operation Management—are marked as recruiting university graduates, with each major offering 45 spots. Notably, the EMU Maintenance major is restricted to male applicants.
Surprisingly, this is not a new initiative. Zhengzhou Railway Vocational and Technical College has been enrolling university graduates since 2022. In that year, 30 undergraduate students were recruited into the Railway Transportation Operation Management major. The number has increased annually, reaching 135 planned enrollments across three majors in 2025.
A school staff member confirmed to reporters that last year’s undergraduate enrollment plan was successfully completed and that this year’s application numbers were “pretty good.” According to the school’s admissions guidelines, university graduates do not take cultural exams but are evaluated via an adaptive test consisting of computer-based and interview components.
When asked why university graduates would apply to a vocational school, the staff speculated that many students were dissatisfied with their undergraduate majors or felt that their job prospects were limited.
Zhengzhou Railway Vocational and Technical College, founded in 1951, is a prestigious institution in the field of transportation. It is a national exemplary and “Double High Plan” high-level vocational college in China. While the school grants official associate degrees, it also boasts strong ties with major rail and transit enterprises, often placing students in “order-based” training classes that lead directly to employment.
In recent years, some vocational schools in China have begun offering programs tailored for university graduates, reflecting a growing trend of educational reorientation. For students dissatisfied with their original majors or struggling in the job market, this may be a pragmatic path to acquire practical skills and re-enter competitive industries.
Whether seen as a step forward or backward, the "bachelor-to-vocational" phenomenon raises important questions about the evolving role of higher education and the job market’s emphasis on practical skills.
